review 1: This book was a quick and easy read, I read it in one day. The author takes us through her most relevant memories of her childhood and the abuse she endured at the hands of her mother and her stepfather. It was a basically good retelling and I applaud the author in putting her story out there. It is heartbreaking that she had to endure this as a child in the first place, let alone what she had to do to actually get out of her abusive situation. I read some previous reviews which are a bit critical of this book being a bad example of how to escape abusive parents. The way I see it, there is no 'right' or 'good' way for children to escape their abusive parents. I perceive her way out as just another example of how law enforcement, schools, and Social Services agencies have f... moreailed to protect children, our most vulnerable population. I think that in part, the message one can gain from this book is that, if you have grown up in an abusive situation, it does not predetermine what kind of an adult or parent you will be. The author makes it clear she was not going to continue in her mother's footsteps by getting pregnant young or being abusive to her own children. Her goal was to do better and prove her mother wrong. So all in all, her book can help many adults, either by giving hope that you can break the cycle of abuse or for those who come in contact with children, to perhaps recognize the signs of abuse and being compassionate enough to help an abused child. An overall good book which is sad and uplifting all at once.
review 2: This is not a very long book, but it is a brutal book. The description of the abuse the author suffered at the hands of her mother is graphic and unrelenting. I had to put it aside for a while because it was too hard to read. There wasn't a lot of story besides the abuse, though. She did manage to break free of the situation, but that was about the last ten pages. There wasn't much in the way of background on why her mother hated her so much. It was strictly from the point of view of a child, with a child's understanding of things. That also made it hard to read less

So well written, but so sad. No one ever deserves to grow up like this.
