review 1: I would recommend this book to anyone who has a spouse who has to travel for work. Dustin Smiley has to go on a year long military deployment leaving his wife to deal with raising three young boys by herself. Sarah Smiley opts to fill her husband's seat at the dinner table once a week with a guest. A teacher, sheriff, firefighter, and zoo keeper are four of the fifty-two guests. She also has politicians and celebrities, and neighbors. A seemingly simple idea that truly led to an adventure in community, and what that looks like in this modern world. Sarah Smiley writes her memoir honestly and openly. Everything was not perfect over those 12 months, and the emotional roller coaster that a traveling spouse takes on the whole family is candidly shared. Highly relate-ab... morele and definitely entertaining, I could not put it down!
review 2: Great book! After having read a excerpt from the book in the Sunday paper, I was expecting it to be a series of stories about the dinners hosted by the Smiley family while their husband/father was deployed for a year. While the stories were in there, I found so much more. Sarah honestly wrote about her family and all that they experienced while her husband, Dustin, was in Africa. In doing so helped at least me realize that children who do not behave as we expect and who are hurtful at times is a normal experience. I found hope as I saw her boys grow and mature though these experiences. Sarah also opened my eyes to see what life is like for families who have a service member away for a length of time and all I can say is THANK YOU to the people serving and THANK YOU to their families for all you go through while they are away. I'm inspired to open my home up to more dinners, whether or not I take to steps to actually do so remains to be seen. Sarah Smiley, thank you for a wonderful book! less
