review 1: Disappointing and a glossy tale of older man exploiting younger man. Its happened for ages albeit older man and younger woman. He had smoke opportunity to see the hand writing on the wall, chose to ignore it and cried and sued when daddy took everything away. Certainly Liberace was not a saint and as typical in that time hid every bit of his sexuality to protect himself. Just another book about a lover done wrong
review 2: I choose this as an airplane read when Amazon offered it for $1.99, curious to read the source material for the HBO film. Thorson had a good ghost writer, and it was better than I expected. Surprisingly, the most interesting part of the book is the account of Liberace's rise to fame, which takes up a large portion of the first part of th
... moree book. Thorson links some of this to stories Liberace told him, but much of the material also seems to be the result of research. As far as their relationship, there's little new here, except that Thorson comes off as much less sympathetic than in the Matt Damon portrayal, freely admitting he chose to be with Liberace for the money and security, revealing some really retrograde ideas about sexuality and sexual orientation, and working quite hard to justify his bad behavior throughout. Liberace doesn't come off much better, though, and ultimately the book is a sad testimony to the tortures of a life lived in the closet. less

What a mess his life was from the start, no wonder he spoiled himself when he could do so.

Interesting, but ultimately very sad, especially the afterword.

Fascinating, though sometimes whiny and/or rambling.
