review 1: Every Thing On It by Shel Silverstein is one of my all-time favorite books. The haunting yet tranquil tone introduced in the first poem, Years From Now, is the number one reason I would recommend it. In the poem, Silverstein states "although I cannot see your face/as you flip these poems awhile/somewhere from some far-off place/I hear you laughing - and I smile." This poem (and book) was published years after Silverstein died! When alive, Silverstein was known for his love of comedy and the inference that making people laugh is making him happy even in the great beyond is incredibly comforting. Posthumous serenity isn't the only theme that makes Every Thing On It worth reading - a fixable tragedy is present as well. For example, in the poem Masks: "she had blue skin/and so... more did he/he kept it hid/and so did she/they searched for blue/their whole life through/then passed right by-/ and never knew." The connotation that we should not hide our "blue skin" was a very important lesson for me to learn when I was 12 and first reading this book. I know that other people can take away the same peace of mind from Every Thing On It that I did. Happy reading.
review 2: Shel Silverstein's "Every Thing on It" is a wonderful book of poetry appropriate for children and adults of any age. I highly recommend making this book an addition to your classroom library. The poems can be read independently or as a class read-aloud depending on the student's grade/achievement level. Shel Silverstein's books are a great resource in the classroom to introduce poetry to students. Most importantly these poems are fun to read and the illustrations complement the poems and themes so well. less
