review 1: What an amazing book!! Stacey relates her amazing 19 years with her friend Wesley the barn owl. I loved the biology and behavioral science she snuck in there too. I know she had to end the book at some point, but I would have loved for her to expand on some of this. It was amazing. But what really moves you as you read the book is the love you feel between this girl and her owl. We have all had that one animal that takes up residence in our hearts and reminds us that we are all made up of the same atoms, connected on a spirit level that is deeper than words could ever explain. Her description of how he changed (and even saved) her life had me in tears by the end, and then laughing, and then reverent, and then crying again. And also, I want to adopt an... more owl.
review 2: If I could I would give it an 11 out of five. This was one of the best books I have EVER read. What is also wonderful this is a true story. On Valentine's Day in 1985, Stacey O'Brien was called into one of the scientists office and since zoos were overrun with owls asked if she would consider raising a 4 day old baby owl. The owl had nerve damage in his wing and although he might one day fly he would never be able to have the endurance to be able to survive in the wild. On the surface it sounds like a lot of fun to raise a pet owl, and although Stacey talks about the joys she also talks about problems and the heartache. One of the problems Stacy had was in order for an owl to remain healthy they MUST eat mice, substitutions would ultimately kill the owl. Not only did she have to locate enough mice (Wesley needed about 6 a day), she had to kill them and then slice them up so baby Wesley could down them. She talks about how sensitive owls how imperative it is not to ever yell at them. If you break the bond you will never get it back. This book pulls on your heart strings so much that I want to read this book over and over and over again. less
