review 1: I've read the Yarn Harlot blog for a couple of years now, but this is the first of her books that I've read. I really enjoyed it! Some stories were more interesting than others, and I don't always agree with her views. But it was funny and I love reading about knitting...not technical stuff, but how people knit and why. I also appreciate that she explains different types of knitters. I'm not a particularly fast or efficient knitter, but she makes me feel like that's okay. As long as I'm knitting! (I loved the part where she described how it felt when she tried to switch techniques and how she went from being able to work steadily and neatly to hardly being able to hold the needles. I can relate to that when I've tried to teach myself more efficient knitting...) Anyway, I l... moreook forward to reading more of her books!
review 2: I think I'm a little bit in love with Stephanie Pearl-McPhee. She lives in a city not too far from me, I think sometimes frequents a yarn store in town, and I think we could be friends. I'm missing a knitting friend since leaving Edmonton, and I dream that Stephanie could come over to knit with me while we drink tea and she shows me how to properly bind off my knitting, and how to block things. We would both say funny things and laugh together. Good times. As is probably obvious, I quite liked my second foray into her writing. She's smart, witty, loves yarn, and is engaging. The personal essays in this volume even travel into the political, exploring knitting as a "traditionally female pursuit", and what that means in terms of the value it holds in society. There were also wonderful stories of knitters, and how their knitting has shaped and helped them. Lovely. less

Fun stories to read about all aspects of knitting ... old stories and new ones.

Always entertaining. Though some of the essay made me cry a little.
