review 1: Faced with a diagnosis of a terminal illness (ALS) as a young, busy working mother of three, this is the story of how Susan Spencer Wendel faced this unimaginable news and resolved to "get/keep her zen on". I agree with some other reviewers that this book is more about a family's personal journey than serving a higher purpose (ala "The Last Lecture", one of my all time favorite books) but is there anything wrong with that? For example, one of the things on Susan's bucket list is to make personal photo albums for each of her children after realizing that in 13 years as a parent, she had not made a single one. She says, "a slide show of photos of my life, for anyone who wanted them. Stories about us. Stories that turned into this book. You are holding my gift to my children.... more My wish is that they have their mother, even after I am gone". Susan was fortunate that she had the family/friend support as well as the financial means to travel extensively and check items off her bucket list as well as to provide financial security for her family through publishing this book. While she received some criticism for that, she also shared in very poignant fashion (although disjointed at times) her and her family's journey with ALS. What would I (or for that matter, you) do if faced with the same situation?
review 2: SusanSpencer-Wendell, a journalist, wife, mother, friend is diagnosed with ALS at 44 years old. This is an intensely personal story that fulfills Susan's goal. "First and foremost, I wrote the book for my family and friends to have, to jog their memories after I'm gone." I appreciate her candid and courageous attitude as she travels along this most difficult journey.A couple of thoughts have remained with me. "Be content with what you have." "Smile because it happened." less
