review 1: In this very easy to read book the author provides a very personal overview of bird behavior by selecting 7 birds and highlighting a distinctive feature of each bird, e.g., cassowary to show how birds evolved from dinosaurs or parrots to show language behavior. I couldn't pick a favorite chapter as they were all so interesting and different. What makes the book compelling is that it is not simply a well researched book but a memoir of her personal contact/relationships with the various birds and bird handlers/researchers including a stint learning how to become a Falconer. Most of what the book covered was new to me and I was astounded and kept putting the book down and saying to my husband, "Did you know.....!" The author is generous in giving other researchers and wri... moreters credit for their work. This encouraged me to read some other books about birds which were more formal and to follow up on a variety of videos on U Tube I otherwise would never have known about.
review 2: Overly sentimental. The author is a bird lover, emphasis on LOVE. "Hummingbird rehabilitators are unsung heroes." Really? "On a cool mid-October day, master falconer Nancy Cowan... hands me the most beautiful bird in the world: a four-year old female Harris's hawk named Jazz." Give me a break!Every other sentence in this book feels like it should have "!!!!" at the end of itAlso, I don't care about the secret lives of chickens. less
