review 1: Having not read Manic yet, I wonder if reading this book first will provide background for the story that was actually written first. I'm curious how she wrote Manic, which I suspect goes into her being diagnosed. That's next... Knowing what I do about bipolar, it's interesting to read about her symptoms as she exhibited them at this young age. I think it's interesting that her mother knows something is wrong with her, and she knows it too, but there's a great crevice between them -- perhaps because her mother is so jealous of everyone when it comes to her father, or uses up the maternal caring over the years of dealing with Terri (or at work)? I'm curious about that family dynamic, whether Terri's doctor was aware of Terri's problem or if it was a family secret. I don't r... moreemember now if her brother went to the doctor when she stabbed him, or what explanation was given for his injury to others... It's interesting to read about a family that displays perfection to the world but has such an imperfect situation to try to deal with behind closed doors.
review 2: This is a startlingly direct and informative memoir that can be difficult to read and yet is so engaging and helpful that I consider it a must-read, regardless of how close or far you are from someone suffering from this illness. Cheney's skill with the pen allows her to describe experiences, thinking patterns and feelings in ways that many probably couldn't. She's matter of fact in telling her story. Her goal is to enlighten and help others. It's a powerful book. less

Excellent follow-up to her first book and a harrowing portrayal of what it's like to be bipolar.
