review 1: I liked this book. I wanted to like it more. It's a good read, particularly the first 1/3 which focuses on Galloway's childhood. Her experiences are rich and unique and her storytelling especially strong in the beginning. And it may be that theater (her great passion) is difficult to translate to the page, or that it's not as engaging as she, herself is. There are awkward overlaps with some of the stories, so that you get one impression of a certain time in her life, only to have the next story shift that perception with conflicting information. Still, I would recommend Mean Little Deaf Queer for it's unique perspective, some honestly brilliant writing about disability and a final chapter which made me weep.
review 2: So the rating is misleading. This is not a
... morebook I loved nor was it one I enjoyed but it is one that brought about intense emotion and thought. Maybe that should get it to four stars but her personality is crass enough to keep it at three. I think that is the core factor on this one...is Galloway someone whose company and theatrical performance you would like? That will likely determine if you enjoy the read. It doesn't however address its value as specialty audience memoir or take away from the brutal honesty that Galloway gives you even when it makes her look ugly and makes you feel a bit ugly yourself. less

Perfect & honest. The most honest memoir I've probably ever read. Couldn't put it down.
