review 1: If you frequent football section at The Guardian, you should be familiar with the man only known as "The Secret Footballer" (TSF). Supposedly a (former?) Premier League player write regular columns to report things from the players' point of view. Now, let me get this straight: I only trust him because he had been trusted by people at the Guardian, good enough to be given regular writing slot. Because, being anonymous, how else can you ascertain his identity? :|Fortunately, though, he has good stories, even if at times outlandish. I enjoy them, but here is a caveat: your enjoyment will be determined by how much you want to put credibility on the author. If you don't, you won't -- but if you do, well, happy reading.
review 2: Interesting book for any football fan
... more, but the more into the behind-the-scenes stuff you are, the better. There's the odd scandal-type thing, but for me the insights into what the day to day life of a top class footballer is and what it feels playing in front to tens of thousands of people feels like when half of them are calling you all sorts were the most interesting parts. This is an honest insight into the mind of someone who if not for his talent would have ended up living in a council flat and quite possibly eventually killing himself. He just had the money and chance to get help for his depression unlike many. He has long since lost his love for the game but he is honest enough to admit how much it has given him.Easy to read and lets us punters into the secretive world we only see glimpses of so I can recommend this to anyone who follows football. Maybe even other team sports because I can't imagine being a top player in any major team sports is much different. Be warned, though, if you have any romantic notions left that the players gives a **** about your club. less
