review 1: This is a very insightful true story in the tradition of Black Like me. The author, a straight man from a conservative religious background, undertakes a year long experiment where he pretends to be gay. He has to come out to his family, friends, and church and in doing so experiences the hurt, loss of relationship, and isolation that happens to gay people. I would recommend that ever person from a conservative religious background give this book a chance. Tim is definitely much more liberal in his Christianity than a lot of conservatives will be comfortable with, but to be honest we all need to be stretched to see Jesus in our lives, and not just rules. This book may really teach us how to love well and to start looking at each other as people, not as labels. I challenge ... moreyou to take the journey.
review 2: As a conservative, evangelical Christian, I read this book hoping to answer the question "how do I show genuine love to people without necessarily agreeing with them?" I felt this book was more a cathartic journal than a solid answer to a persistent question. This is probably a result of the author's experiment and how he learned not to force his opinions on others. From a Christian perspective, I think he could have substantiated his conclusions and ponderings with more scripture references to add more validity. As another reviewer mentioned the swearing, smoking, and drinking seem inconsistent with a legalistic religious background. It made me wonder what sort of upbringing would be fine with binge drinking and the f-bomb but not okay with different sexual orientation. I just had a hard time grasping where Tim was coming from. And to top it all off, the poor editing drove me a little bonkers. less

Great concept, but the book could have been more well-written and more compelling.

I found the spelling mistakes to be distracting. Interesting read.
