review 1: As a cat lover (though one who fears being bitten or scratched by these unpredictable pets) I enjoy reading memoirs by cat owners about their cat or cats. I also enjoy memoirs by dog owners. So knowing that I am a cat nut, you must factor that into my praise for any book on cats. This particular cat owning memoir is very witty. It is not deep or world shattering. It is not rolling on the floor funny which usually requires an element of slapstick or a recounting of cosmic stupidity to produce a ROTFL. It is just well written. Tom Cox has a excellent command of language. He is an candid writer, revealing his character in his writing. He can be downright endearing in his gaga-ness for cats. His descriptions of his cats, neighbors, friends, his father, and even his furniture ... moreare amusing and fun. It is a rambling telling of his early adult adventures in cat ownership. It is not a day by day memoir. It skips from memorable event to the next, mostly in chronological order. There are occasional breaks for special cat terminology invented by the author. Why should we care about the life of Tom Cox and his cats mostly in rural parts of England? Because the man writes well and he is funny on cats. Actually, I suspect he his funny on any topic. Tom Cox is well read, using references to literature (mostly modern) in his writing. Tom Cox is an expert on rock music, weaving that into his writing on cats too. Lastly, I love the cover photo of The Bear, his oldest and most anti-social cat. I also love the photo of Tom on the back with his six beautiful cats chowing down on the countertop in his kitchen all at the same time. (My cats never eat all at the same time. He must be a genius at training cats.)
review 2: Tom Cox writes acutely observed, often hilarious and sometimes excruciating moments which frequently trigger recognition or yearning, or both. Readers of his blog, tweets or Guardian columns will already be familiar with some of the feline and human characters and featured places. These being my route to the books this feels like a Star Wars Episode 1 style prequel filling in the back history of protagonists in a well loved adventure series but being slightly less classic than the current stories. Predominantly about the cats this also meditates on house-hunting, families and the curious ennui of those spaces between city and country. less
