review 1: I loved this book -- it was a great sneak peek into the world of television, especially iconic shows that I know and love. The most compelling aspect of the book is the contrast of network TV in the 80s and 90s and that of today. The last chapter was thought provoking on that point. The rest of the book was good fun and a behind-the-scenes glimpse of classic TV in the words of those who created it.
review 2: I listened to this as an audiobook, and as a result found it somewhat confusing as to who was "talking." The book is composed of a series of interview snippets about the creation and execution of the key TV series that made NBC the top network for so long, an unusual writing technique that worked surprisingly well. Now, I watched little TV during the "Must
... moreSee TV" era, and even had to look up some of the stars... I did recognize the faces, if not the names. Even so, I rather enjoyed Littlefield's account of how things worked back then, and his assessment of how and why they fell apart. I'd wondered about that, since network TV has largely devolved into a swamp of inane reality shows that I can't figure out who would even watch. It's been blamed on the rise of cable, but look... cable and even streaming providers (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon) are now doing most of the quality, interesting programming around. This was an entertaining, fun and even thoughtful look at what went into the creation of some of the most-watched shows in television history. less

An interesting, if slightly surfacy, look at a really interesting time in TV history.

Some of this is clearly one-sided, but it's enjoyable nonetheless.
