review 1: Wow. Beautifully written and hard to put down.Engaging. I think what I loved about this memoir is the array of feelings that course through you as you are reading... Ortiz is able to take you through her excavation (the title is perfect) of the complex and layered emotions that surrounded this time period of her life in a way that is artful, emotional, poetic, honest and bold. If you were to look at the situation in black and white, yes... she was a victim. But nothing is black and white, what we glean from our past changes as we grow. I felt that in taking this ride with Ortiz as she looks back and writes about her experience with someone who was supposed to be an authority figure in her life, we are witnesses, at the end, to the birth of an adult woman who emerged with ... morea strong sense of self-worth and an ever-evolving inner strength. Inspiring.
review 2: I read this memoir (like a novel in its subject manner) in one long whoosh. It is that captivating, so much that the subject matter is something you cannot turn away from, like an accident, or a crash. Fascinating, and horrifying simultaneously. How we are shaped, formed, and taken advantage of; how parents can be so compliant (or not even the least bit present). How life can be so desperate; and yet...and yet. Ortiz has written the modern day Lolita, in which poetic moments sing beneath the tragedy of youth cut short. Bravo. less
