review 1: This book, about the life lessons one man gained from reading and studying the works of Jane Austen, is a great example of why the time of life during which you read a book makes a difference. The author admits to dismissing Austen before he had just the right teacher, and then he grew to appreciate what he got from reading her books. I don't think he would have gained the same insights if he had read the books at a age. A pretty light mix of memoir, literature analysis, and Jane Austen biography.
review 2: This was an interesting look at Jane Austen's novels, and I find it refreshing that it was written by a man, since men generally avoid her books (and the movies based off of them) at all costs. I would like to pass this book on to all the people who say Jane
... more Austen is boring or just romantic fluff. There's real substance there! However, I am one who reads for enjoyment, the experience of living someone else's life for a little while, experiencing someone else's adventure. I don't read books to analyze them. If I learn something deeper from a book than just the plot, great, but I certainly don't go digging for it. Therefore, it was interesting to see the lessons the author gleaned from each novel, but I doubt they'll change my appreciation or view of them.It was interesting having the author's own experiences juxtaposed with the events in the books. However, he had a bit more coarse language (one f word, some other strong language, although very infrequent) in those tellings than I would have liked. less

Enjoyable. Good advice for being a grown up and caring about others.

A very readable literary criticism of Jane Austen's major novels.
