review 1: Decent but repetitive. A lot of the story goes from one project to another. Hiroshi feels uncertain about his work but completes it, there's a clip of the cover art, more people are brought in, and it repeats. "A Drifting Life" occasionally looks into the act of creation, where inspiration comes from, and how a genre is shaped, but it really needs to look further into this. I wish the betrayals and alliances between the artists had been more interesting, but the only relationship that held any weight for me was between Hiroshi and his brother. I admit I haven't read many graphic novels or manga myself but aside from some great backgrounds, the art in this feels static and boring. Why not start out in the four-panel style Hiroshi begins with and make the layouts and angles ... moremore dynamic as Hiroshi's style gets more innovative? It would be a great means of showing his growing in manga visually. If you really love the history of manga, this will be a great read, but otherwise it's a bit of a chore to get through.
review 2: Probably the largest manga I have read in one volume. While this book is slow paced, it basically tells the story of Tatsumi as a young boy in love with the idea and wanting to be a manga artist. The book covers his struggles with his brother, his family, his school, his non start love life ,career choice and the struggle to get published. Very straight forward, intimate and frank in places, other places it lags in a major way, but who am I to say someone's life is dull? I haven't climbed Mount Everest lately. less

I was expecting a lot more. Though I am happy it exists despite the faulty execution.
