review 1: Most of my friends had a difficult time coming to grips with the fact that I was reading this book, so you may be able to ferret out the circles I frequent. I will describe this book as an important one. I disagree with much in the book and that is precisely why this was a good read for me. As the author urges, we should get to know the people we disagree with. That may be one of the strongest points of this one. That said, Wahls really falls down in the area of logic. That is a tragic flaw for this book because he rests much of his plea for understanding, tolerance and inclusion on his logical points. He was on the debate team in high school and that is a fact that he mentions several times. If he had maintained his focus on the emotional and experiential material, the boo... morek would have fared better.I disagree with many of Wahls' beliefs regarding homosexuality and it is very easy to continue doing so precisely because of the logical weaknesses. I empathize with Wahls' experience regarding homosexuality and it is very easy to do so because he does a great job of laying that experience out on the table.
review 2: I was recently impressed by a national news clip of Zach speaking out for equality in scouting (in counterpoint to a Stereotypical White Man of a Certain Age) and knocking it out of the park. While the timeline jumps quite a bit from vignette to vignette, the book as a whole is a powerful argument for a change in current BSA policy and is structured on the 12 points of The Scout Law. While Zach's youth, idealism and debate training occasionally pull focus, I agree with his conclusion that the only way to really overcome prejudice is to try to know someone as a fellow person first before any other labels. A worthy reminder for all of us. less
