review 1: This book was creative in ways that books usually aren't. It blended two stories -- each one a hundred or so years removed from the other. I know other stories do that too but this one, written in Ansay's style, doesn't reveal all and allows/forces her reader to think about the commonalities of each telling and it's not until the very last page that reader can say, "Aha! How exquisite and perfect is this." I also loved that the underlying themes involved passion about music -- performing and composing-- as well as writing -- finding what's true and right and finding the right way to tell the story.

... moreish You was a decidedly dull read. It concerns Jeanette, a college lecturer who is writing a novelised version of Johannes Brahms' relationship with Clara Schumann. At the same time, she is halfheartedly pursuing a sort of relationship with a German named Hart, and trying to answer the age-old snoozefest of a question, can men and women ever just be friends? (Yes. You don't need to write a novel to explain this.)I never got a good handle on how Jeanette felt about Hart. I also found the story-within-story chapters about Brahms and Clara to be wishy-washy and uninteresting. Ultimately, this was a bland read. It wasn't offensively bad, but it wasn't particularly interesting. less

The mixed reviews for this actually are good news for upcoming book club discussion.

Actually enjoyed the modern love story. The historical Schuman stuff gets tedious.
