review 1: I had a mixed experience with this book. On the one hand, it is technically highly adept: it has a solid plot, the characters arc the way characters ought to arc, people are not stupid, and the prose is solid. On the other hand, it - and I can't really put my finger on why - lacked that mystery spark that elevates a book into something that is likely to stick with you. I read it yesterday and already am losing track of what it's about. You know? It just felt a little... inorganic, somehow. Premise: Kate is a children's TV writer whose show has just gotten canceled by a network executive, Ian. Kate and Ian run into each other at a bar later that day, when Kate is drunk and wearing a classic "screw you, world!" kind of sexy outfit. (Kate also got dumped by her fiance on the ... moresame day.) Kate also needs a date to a wedding who will impress her ex-fiance. Ian turns out to have a lot of tattoos and a nominal "bad boy" history, so something something he's her guy. And Ian also turns out to be the guardian of a young nephew he hasn't really connected with, a kid Kate becomes friends with. (This was my favorite part of the book, actually. It felt a bit like this was a novel that wanted to be more mainstream literature, about Kate's relationship with the kid.) I have a hazy theory that maybe some contemporary writers don't really want to write sex scenes, but feel that they must to compete in the marketplace. In this book, I felt like the sexy scenes were all... slightly off. Like when Kate and Ian are bickering and flirting, it's pretty good. Once they start making out, it gets kind of artificial-feeling, antiseptic, not-really-sexy. Again, hard to put my finger on what exactly. Part of it may be the characters - I liked Ian and Kate, but while I appreciated that they weren't emotionally totally stupid, they just felt a little too awesome. Like Kate loses her job and her fiance on the same day, and she isn't worried about money, and she's upset about her fiance but not really UPSET about her fiance, so when Ian sweeps her off her feet, I don't know, she just feels a little too even-keeled. I might try this author again, but overall, and I feel kind of bad saying this, because the book was so very competent, I had a kind of "Eh" experience. Fine, but not likely something I'll reread or think about again.
review 2: This is a really good book about a bad turning into the future that brings love. After being fired from her job & dumped for another woman by her fiancé,Kate goes to a bar for a rebound fling only to come face to face with her former boss Ian. Kate & her friend Simone inform Ian that she's looking for a bad boy with tattoos, earrings & rides a Harley. Well Ian transforms himself back into the bad boy he was & takes Kate home. What neither of them expect is to feel something between them. What happens next is true romance with the usual troubles, thinking you know someone when you don't, not wanting to believe that you really do have feelings & the general all around prove to them you're an idiot they won't love you then. Toss in a nephew who Kate understands & Ian doesn't & you have a good love story that makes you feel good. less
