review 1: I have to ponder over why this book has received such disparate reviews. It seems as if it is either loved or hated and I can't understand why. The same writing is either described as sublime or very bad. My fear is that humanity is losing its sense of humorous or that it expects a vampire in every story or that a novel must adhere to a set formula. I don't know and cannot presume to guess - only ponder. I loved this book, the story, the characters, the description of the food, the historical asides, the rhyming, the prose. Everything. But then, I love tomatoes. almost but not quite as much as Davido. Perhaps that is what is required here - a love of tomatoes, a love for the earth, a tolerance for dirt under your nails, literally and metaphorically. After writing this revi... moreew, I still don't know.
review 2: While this book had interesting information ( it reminded me of an old time crass version of Under the Tuscan Sun in many ways), and the plot was basically enjoyable, it was very crude and left me wondering what all the crudeness was really for. If you do not mind an over the top focus on and repeated detailed descriptions regarding genitalia, masturbation, belching, reliving ones' self, and so on (not to mention the cursing!) then you may well rate this book much higher then I! Without all the crudeness, the story itself is quite enjoyable. less

This is one of the most charming, delightful books I've read in awhile. Such a pleasure to read.

An enchantingly whimsical yet uplifting tale of love, religion and food.
