review 1: I'm basically the same age as the author and enjoyed the various 90s tidbits (Devin Sawa!). I also had an evangelistic friend who would drag me to her youth groups for a while, but I never quite "got it". I also have a craving for Pizza Pub now, my favorite Dells restaurant. I liked how the writing mirrored the writer's growth. The beginning was hard for me to read, but then I binge-read the second half because I needed to know what happened.
review 2: This book resonated with me immensely at times. The Christian culture she writes about is one with which I am deeply familiar. At times I found myself subconsciously resenting the author when her experience differed from mine, simply because I got used to feeling like her story was in many ways as much about me a... mores it was about her. In the end, Addie's story wasn't the same as mine, and I suppose I am ok with that. I enjoyed reading how her set of experiences, many equivalent to my own, ultimately led her to a path of peace. She had a good command of her writing, even if the sporadic shifts to second person were sometimes a bit jarring for the reader. I appreciate the story she shared and enjoyed revisiting some of the music and memories that made up my youth in the church. I would recommend this book to anyone who has struggled with maintaining a faith identity after the fires of church camp and Wednesday night youth groups have started to dwindle. Addie's story is one of preservation, acceptance, and growth. less
