review 1: It was an okay story, but won't stick. Ask me in a week and I probably will have forgotten what the book was about. Maybe it's the story, of little interest to me. Two middle aged men in South Africa, meant to regain memories of times past, of the days of rebellion against the regime. Both try to do good in this time, each in his own way. Not understood by the other, not welcomed by the receiving party. The entire story can only lead to desillusion.A real depressing story, not enlightened by humor or beautiful descriptions of the area. A book that only has one thing to convey, that there is no hope for South-Africa.

... moreay South Africa. All is not well. They project there failed dreams and hopes on a young villager. A drug addict they hope to nurse back to health. I'm sorry to say that the writer couldn't arouse my interest in the protagonists. I didn't care about them or their past. Also, I couldn't understand why they were so desperate to help the drug addict.Adriaan van Dis writes poetically as usual, but it just isn't enough. 'In Afrika' or 'Dubbelliefde' are much better choices if you are looking to read something by Van Dis.
