review 1: Though I did more perusing than reading word-for-word, I found this to be a delightful, photographic historical-montage of Agatha and company, upper middle class tour around the world, and how people, fashion, entertainment, and lands have changed since the 1920's. Such a splendid opportunity she was afforded to be included in those historical sea voyages and land expeditions. And how wonderful of her family to have preserved and compiled her letters and journal entries to share publicly.
review 2: This book is a collection of letters, notes and photographs from 1922 when Agatha Christie went on a 10 month voyage around the world to promote the British Empire exhibition. She was part of a small party. She travelled through South Africa, Australia, New Zealand,
... more Hawaii and Canada. It is an very interesting book.I quickly found that I forgot that Agatha Christie wrote those wonderful murder mystery books, and settled in with her for the journey as a person who felt she was very privileged to be on this journey. It certainly was not luxury all the way round the world for her, there are many stories of discomfort, sickness, very strange people, and fascinatingly towards the end a severe shortage of money. The Christies were expected to fund most of this trip themselves! This is a must read book for anybody who was interested in the period of the 1920s, of a time where travel was at a far less hectic pace, and communication with family and friends took weeks rather than seconds! In fact, I was reading this book at the same time as reading about the 1920s and 1930s in the biography of her Majesty the Queen Mother and the whole experience has definitely left me yearning for that more relaxed time in our history. Next time I'm queueing up to go through airport security and suffering all the indignities of modern travel I shall remember this book with fondness! less
