review 1: Read this shortly after reading Rashid's earlier Descent Into Chaos, which I thought was a much more thoughtful and illuminating book. Pakistan on the Brink to me tended to just re-hash the same arguments that were made in the earlier book , just updated to reflect the last four years. Readable, and if you just picked up this as a standalone book informative, but in my opinion it did not expand upon the previous book in any significant way.
review 2: Ahmed Rashid's book on recent events in Pakistan should be required reading for everyone. A Pakistani journalist, Rashid pulls no punches when discussing the treacherous state of affairs in Central and Southeast Asia. And if his vision of the future is dark, he does offer some suggestions and wayposts for bringin
... moreg hope to his people (and to the world at large, because further chaos in Pakistan will not happen in a vacuum). There's plenty of blame to go around, and Rashid rightly points out ways in which the Pakistani government's and military's paranoic, myopic view has strangled the country's development, but he also discusses areas in which the US and Europe, as well as Pakistan's nearer neighbors have contributed to destabilization. A peaceful, democratic, growing Pakistan can only be a benefit to the world. Here's hoping that Rashid and others can stimulate a discussion that can move things forward. less

Well, I'm glad I read this, but it was less comfortable than keeping my head in the sand.
