review 1: This book showed a lot of promise and I enjoyed the first half until I encountered A.K.'s transphobic rant halfway through. She has no idea what she's talking about and would have done a lot better to stick to her own experiences instead of trying to devalue and mock the experiences of "those young kids and their trans*/genderqueer stuff these days". She comes off like the gross "womyn born womyn only" tribes. Go hang out at Mich Fest and lay off writing books, A.K. I don't want that transphobic garbage in my house: in the donate box.
review 2: I can't remember, now, down which Internet rabbit hole I came across a recommendation for this book; oh well! I am glad (but not surprised) that the Long Beach library system had a copy. I think this is an important boo... morek, but at the same time, I don't think it's really a definitive book about the specific topic. Summers makes a good point that most of the "story" takes place in 2003, which (happily) is, in many ways, a very different era from today regarding gay rights and understanding of the fluidity and spectrum of gender and gender identity and norms. Still, I felt more that this particular work really skimmed the surface of the experience (though one reviewer points out that pregnancy renders one's experience exactly as impressionistic) and the specific topic. Overall, it's more about the indignities, expectations, and harassment, small and large, daily and over the course of a lifetime, women experience at work, at the doctor's office, on the street, and even from their own friends and family. less
