review 1: You read a book like this and you can't help but see Uncle Albert talking to you in his solitude, baring his soul, letting you and free writing in such a way as to heal his soul. He evidently enjoys here what he is sharing and he is writing for himself, as all the best writing really should be. He is not trying to impress you or charm you by appearing so happy because life is not always going to be happy. So please don't be put of by his sadness or accuse him of being too depressed because this is a sincere man in the grieving process over his mother. I had to go go through this grief myself after leaving Egypt and converting to Christianity. Not many people could fathom what I was going through, and that is why I can fully relate to Albert Cohen here. His book motivates m... moree to really want to read another book pretty soon, which is Opening Up: The Healing Power of Expressing Emotions by James W. Pennebaker. Writing has been used effectively as a means of therapy and has help people come along. I can't help but fall in love with the Jewish spirit of the writer. He writes like one of those Andalusian poets who express intense, deep longing for Jerusalem, and in that case the author's Jerusalem is his beloved mother. The book might come across as Oedipal, but in his own Semitic Jewish context the mother is everything. If the mother is Jewish, that is all it takes for the entire family to have the Jewish faith. A mother is Home, and Home is Mother to us all. The author revels in the fact that his mom was a daughter of the Law of Moses, and like most Semitic women she didn't marry for love but it was biblical love that was born in the marriage as love is far beyond a lustful, fleeting passion. I love this woman and I will love her. Love is born out of commitment. Such love is sacred and it grows with the birth of the baby born to both couple (p. 18). It is such love that can withstand the harshness of love; it is love like our Lord's Chesed, i.e. His lovingkindness or grace, that will endure forever. There is no greater love than this kind of love coming from Above in marriage as the Bible defines it.
review 2: Book of My Mother is a book from a neglectful son to his mother. The son, who didn't really think much of his mother, sudenly feel lost and empty after his mother's dead. This book is a compilation of Albert Cohen's contemplations of his late mother.I love Albert's choice of language or it was Bella Cohen's translation to be exact. It was beautiful and strong. Showing a deep regret of a son who didn't spend enough time and energy to love his mother when she was alive. This is a perfect book for everybody. It will make you think of your mother, especially if you have a strong connection with her. Thank you for Archipelago Books who gave this book to me through Goodreads' giveaway. Such a beautiful and must read book. less
