review 1: Alisha Basso's "This Blood" (the first book in her Grace Allen series of novels) is a suspenseful, exciting take on the supernatural world.Grace is a waitress at a dive bar, and one day is much like another: get dressed in the too-revealing outfits her boss demands, drive to work (praying her car survives for another day), sling booze for several hours, go home, lather, rinse, repeat. Until she finds a ring just lying in the gutter. Grace pawns it for cash, but soon enough the new owner of the ring shows up at the bar looking for her.It turns out he's a vampire, and not just any vampire, but THE vampire lord, and he's going to use that ring to rule the world. It turns out the ring isn't just a ring; it's got the power of an ancient and nearly extinct race of powerful be... moreings poured into it. And only the last child of that race can awaken the power. You guessed it, that's Grace. Soon she finds herself the prisoner of the vampire lord, along with her best friend and a warlock who tried to warn her about the ring and the vampires. Will Grace come up with a plan to escape Seth, the vampire lord and would-be ruler of the world? Will she figure out how to master the power of the ring? Will she save her friends? You'll have to read the book for yourself to find out.The book is narrated by Grace, and she's got a lively and fun voice. She responds believably, turning at first to pop-culture fantasy references to try and understand the new world she's been plunged into, and slowly getting used to the supernatural all around her without losing her humanity. She's very easy for the reader to identify with as she leads us along in her adventures. It's well-written with clean, clear prose. There's plenty of action, both of the martial and the bedroom varieties, and a well-fleshed out (both figuratively and literally!) cast of supporting characters. It's a fun read, and I'm looking forward to the next installment.
review 2: I always take the time to read a sample of books and the reviews others write on a book, I think that alot of times it all explains what the reader takes from it, we all see things in a different perspective. I seen more likes than dislikes.. as I read the sample, I couldn't get the story out of my head to find out what was going to happen next, so I downloaded it after putting it on the back shelf to finish another one I was reading, I still was unable to get the thought of what was going to happen next to Grace out of my head.. so I put the other book aside to read the full version of "This Blood", wow was I a happy Camper to read this! like some stories the Author gets stuck in a repetitive cycle throughout the first half of the book, but not this one, I only seen one or two repeats to a dream (which was a part of how Seth got into her Head), other than that is was a smooth read all the way through, had me on the edge of my seat not wanting to put it down for everyday life..very Intriguing story with the love twists had my heart pounding! I didn't once think of any other book to read all throughout this story, really had me spellbound! (I got online to see if there were any other books she wrote) can't wait for the second one of the continuing saga of Grace, Great Job on writing this story Ms. Brasso! less
