review 1: Nicely written, fun to read, interesting story of the American author's marriage into an Indian family. I loved the sections set in India, at her in-laws' ancient palace in the Indian countryside. The Indian characters are so well presented. I didn't enjoy as much the sections set in her everyday life as a journalist in Hong Kong--the heroine in her previous life as platform for springing into the new life. I think the pacing would've been improved a bit by having less Hong Kong, more India. But that's quibbling. Really, a very good book and a compelling, charming story. I'd like to read a sequel if they move into the palace at some point!
review 2: I had a hard time getting into this book. However, I persisted, and did really enjoy the last several chapters. T
... morehe difference? The beginning was more of a travel log, and the author seemed to be self-described as self-absorbed and somewhat selfish, driven by material things. Not values I hold or respect. However, through her relationship with her boyfriend/fiance/husband, and his family, she grew and changed. The point where I started finding the book worth reading was the point where the author performed her first unselfish act to help her future family. less
