This beautifully rendered portrait of life in rural Ireland charms and delights with its authentic characters and gentle humor. This vivid portrayal of the universal search for love brings with it a darker tale, one that is heartbreaking in its poignancy. James McCloon spends the first 10 years of his life in an orphanage where child labor is the norm. He is adopted at the age of 10 by a loving couple. After their deaths, he is left with a small farm and plenty of vivid memories of life at the orphanage. He decides it is time to find a lady to marry and share his life with. He begins by placing an advertisement in a local newspaper. Lily, a single teacher, and living nearby answers James's ad. Thus, begins the quest between the two of them to meet and get to know each other better. You are in for a surprise ending as James and Lily do finally meet.
I am sorry I didn't like this book. I found it soooooo long to get to the point and couldn't understand why they had to make him so special ed and ignorant. I could have done without trying to decipher what he was trying to say throughout the book. I would have liked to see him betrayed as a more "attractive" character (not necessarily the good looking kind). I did enjoy learning of his history but there were few good parts (mostly the end, thank god), but I really couldn't wait for the book to be over.
Just thought it was a little ling winded and boring.
Good read, enjoyed it.
