It was captivating. I wanted to know how it would all work out. But the amount of implausibility here was just staggering. Halt, the only person with experience working with the Outsiders, the individual with the most experience period - DOES ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!! O that's right, he played dress up one time. He lets his younger, less experienced companions risk their lives over and over again, while his greatest contribution was a bit of Kingly cosplay. And don't get me started on the whole poisoned water thing. TWO RANGERS...not one, BUT TWO!!! TWO FREAKING RANGERS, AND THEY DON'T THINK THAT MAYBE THEY SHOULD KEEP AN EYE ON WATER THAT HORACE WILL BE DRINKING??!?! They leave it to sit, all by itself, unguarded, in a tent halfway across the arena? Goodness me - since when have rangers become so moronic? They can infiltrate castles while being outnumbered, they can overcome armies of Skandian fighters, they can remember all the ins and outs of all the races, people, tribes, nations, and organized groups in all of the land - BUT TWO OF THEM TOGETHER CAN'T THINK TO KEEP AN EYE ON A CUP OF WATER?!?!?! And what was with all the "trials by fight to the death"? How does Will pegging the Genovesan with an arrow prove that he was a liar? All that it proves is that Will is a good shot, and that genovesans can be killed by arrows.I am ranting and raving, and should stop. This book was a mess. Great idea, terrible execution. Previously intelligent and capable characters are suddenly incapable of protecting a cup of water from poisoning. Plot resolutions that thumb their noses at your suspension of disbelief. From this book I have learned that whenever I need to prove a point, I just need to challenge one of the opposition to a fight to the death. Whoever dies is wrong, and whoever lives is right. Because that makes complete sense. Perhaps Mr. Flanagan and I should fight to the death over the implausibility of the conflict resolutions in this book? Or the sudden idiocy that has taken hold of his three main characters? Or the fact that his story teaches children that the best way to prove someone is lying is by creating your own lie to combat their lie? Ugh...

This was a great book. I am now moving on to book 9, but book 8 was a great read. I strongly dislike Tennyson. He manipulates and uses people for his own purposes. When Halt was impersonating his brother and challenged Tennyson I was getting excited to see this fight between the "Sunrise Warrior" and Tennyson's two brutes. When the Genovesan poisoned the Sunrise Warrior i actually started yelling that my neighbors came over to my door and asked me to quite down. I got even more upset when they assassinated the actual king. I soon found myself reading nonstop. Until the book was finally over. My favorite part of the book is the fight between the Sunrise warrior and the first one of Tennyson's brutes using the mace.

I found this book especially interesting. Halt really delivers in this part of the series.

Great series for kids... mine recommended to me, and I enjoyed the light, fast read.

Great book! It's back on track with all the expectations of Flanagan.
