Ranger's Apprentice
review 1: The book Ranger Apprentice book 8: The Kings of Clonal, is buy John Flanagan. This story was not bad but not great. This was a better outing than the last one for this series, but still not as enjoyable as the earlier work. Halt, Will and Horace are called into the neighboring kingdom of Clonmel to help discredit a cult that has been working to quietly seize power. There are lots of ranger antics from Halt and Will, and feats of strength from Horace. The plot was fairly generic but it showed the characters well. Unfortunately it felt like a forgone conclusion that the characters would win out, by feats even more fantastic than ever before. It's starting to make the stories feel superficial. As usual there was some nicely done humor to liven things up. I would give this boo... morek a 3.5 out of 5.
review 2: This review is on Ranger's Apprentice: The Kings of Clonmel by John Flanagan. This book starts when will is at the Ranger's annual gathering. He helps the first year recruits. Will will be able to help the kids with all their questions and problems they have? He receives word that Halt is not going to be able to make it. He is very disappointed. Halt is out chasing of a new religious cult that is a scam to get free gold and jewels. At the end of the Gathering Will learns he will no longer be the Ranger of his fief but will be going to his original fief, Redmont to join a special task force with Halt and Horace. When they get to Clonmel they find the religious groups main party. They are called the Outsiders and their god is called Aleissas. They have 2 parties. One of them are outlaws that go through the countryside killing farmers and destroying farms. Then the Outsiders, or the religious group, come in and supposedly scare the outlaws away and then they ask for gold to praise their god with. They find the group at the town Mountshannon. They watch the Outsides supposedly chasing the Outlaws away. They decide to go to Dun Kilty and go to the castle of the king of Clonmel. King Ferris is not a very good king and is also Halt's brother. They go there and tell Ferris to oppose the Outsiders and to propose a different hero, the Sunrise Warrior. The Outsiders leader, Tennyson, decides that if the Sunrise Warrior, who is Horace in disguise, is so powerful he should fight his 2 bruisers, or bodyguards, in trial of combat. How could he beat 2 men when he is only one? He beats them with ease. He kills the first one with ease as he had not very much skill. For the second fight someone poisoned his water so he was disoriented and could not focus. He almost loses until Will shoots his opponent with an arrow because he figured out that someone poisoned the water. Then Will fights one of Tennyson's assassins in a bow battle and he easily wins because he is very well trained with a bow. “An ordinary archer practices until he gets it right. A ranger practices until he never gets it wrong.” Then someone finds out Tennyson has killed King Ferris and left. I love all of these Ranger's Apprentice books and will continue to read them until I finish all of them. less

It was captivating. I wanted to know how it would all work out. But the amount of implausibility here was just staggering. Halt, the only person with experience working with the Outsiders, the individual with the most experience period - DOES ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!! O that's right, he played dress up one time. He lets his younger, less experienced companions risk their lives over and over again, while his greatest contribution was a bit of Kingly cosplay. And don't get me started on the whole poisoned water thing. TWO RANGERS...not one, BUT TWO!!! TWO FREAKING RANGERS, AND THEY DON'T THINK THAT MAYBE THEY SHOULD KEEP AN EYE ON WATER THAT HORACE WILL BE DRINKING??!?! They leave it to sit, all by itself, unguarded, in a tent halfway across the arena? Goodness me - since when have rangers become so moronic? They can infiltrate castles while being outnumbered, they can overcome armies of Skandian fighters, they can remember all the ins and outs of all the races, people, tribes, nations, and organized groups in all of the land - BUT TWO OF THEM TOGETHER CAN'T THINK TO KEEP AN EYE ON A CUP OF WATER?!?!?! And what was with all the "trials by fight to the death"? How does Will pegging the Genovesan with an arrow prove that he was a liar? All that it proves is that Will is a good shot, and that genovesans can be killed by arrows.I am ranting and raving, and should stop. This book was a mess. Great idea, terrible execution. Previously intelligent and capable characters are suddenly incapable of protecting a cup of water from poisoning. Plot resolutions that thumb their noses at your suspension of disbelief. From this book I have learned that whenever I need to prove a point, I just need to challenge one of the opposition to a fight to the death. Whoever dies is wrong, and whoever lives is right. Because that makes complete sense. Perhaps Mr. Flanagan and I should fight to the death over the implausibility of the conflict resolutions in this book? Or the sudden idiocy that has taken hold of his three main characters? Or the fact that his story teaches children that the best way to prove someone is lying is by creating your own lie to combat their lie? Ugh...

This was a great book. I am now moving on to book 9, but book 8 was a great read. I strongly dislike Tennyson. He manipulates and uses people for his own purposes. When Halt was impersonating his brother and challenged Tennyson I was getting excited to see this fight between the "Sunrise Warrior" and Tennyson's two brutes. When the Genovesan poisoned the Sunrise Warrior i actually started yelling that my neighbors came over to my door and asked me to quite down. I got even more upset when they assassinated the actual king. I soon found myself reading nonstop. Until the book was finally over. My favorite part of the book is the fight between the Sunrise warrior and the first one of Tennyson's brutes using the mace.

I found this book especially interesting. Halt really delivers in this part of the series.
