For a first novel, this was great. Charlie is a complex character, and really relateable. The world is rather dark, which is unsurprising when the protagonist is a cop. The real world is pretty dark for them, as well. The novel starts in the middle of her career, several months after a life altering event, which is the basis for the book. The setting of the world reminds me a bit of Alien Nation, a series and movie I really enjoyed, in that the world has expanded to include other races. Now we're trying to integrate those races into our world. The problem is that not everyone wants to be integrated. Some would rather take over. I definitely have high hopes for this series, and look forward to reading more.

Got about halfway through... *spoilers!*I just felt like Charlie was too much like the typical urban fantasy heroine (attitude, reckless) didn't work well here when she was throwing herself into dangerous situations, but she was also a mother. Though she considered taking on a desk job, there wasn't enough thought put into it and adding in her history with her husband only to kill him off happened too fast. Meh.
