review 1: 1 star. DNF.The first chapter or so of this book I thought--why on earth are there so many bad reviews? Charlie's a witty, sexy mom who kicks butt with a hilarious siren partner named Hank. How could this go wrong?Well, I quit a 1/3 of the way through. She's having weird shit happening to her body, and instead of talking to someone about it, she doesn't. Then when she finally does, it's really vague questions, not the ones, you know, a cop would ask. Furthermore, she accepts his really vague answers, some of which are non-answers. She is a cop who is trained in interrogation! Where are her spidey-senses? Then story just drags, and man, we get these random scenes that just happen and you wonder how the person got there and if the author just threw in five sentences, because... more they seemed cool. It's just.. sad.I was really irritated with this book, because I really wanted to like it. It seemed different in the sea of urban fantasy, but instead she's a avoid-all-logical-questions cop who sees a man and pants for sex. She's a teen character put into a 30 year old's body. Walk away.
review 2: i typed up a short review of this last night before i went to bed after my day from hell, but naturally of course goodreads decided to go down for maintenance at that EXACT MOMENT and i lost everythingso basically i loved this book and the characters and the emphasis placed on the relationship between the women in this world (most particularly charlie and her daughter -- the MOST important relationship in this entire book -- and charlie and her sister). there was some really cool worldbuilding and a host of interesting side characters. considering the direction it's currently headed i'm not rly foreseeing any love interests for her, but that can obvs change in the next book. i need to get my hands on the next one as soon as possible less

For a first novel, this was great. Charlie is a complex character, and really relateable. The world is rather dark, which is unsurprising when the protagonist is a cop. The real world is pretty dark for them, as well. The novel starts in the middle of her career, several months after a life altering event, which is the basis for the book. The setting of the world reminds me a bit of Alien Nation, a series and movie I really enjoyed, in that the world has expanded to include other races. Now we're trying to integrate those races into our world. The problem is that not everyone wants to be integrated. Some would rather take over. I definitely have high hopes for this series, and look forward to reading more.

Got about halfway through... *spoilers!*I just felt like Charlie was too much like the typical urban fantasy heroine (attitude, reckless) didn't work well here when she was throwing herself into dangerous situations, but she was also a mother. Though she considered taking on a desk job, there wasn't enough thought put into it and adding in her history with her husband only to kill him off happened too fast. Meh.
