Laurie is kinda like that friend-of-a-friend you meet at a party who doesn't embarrass easily, talks loudly and monopolizes a conversation with anecdotes (oddly enough this person is often a teacher). If you're not in the mood, she can be somewhat annoying. But if you have a glass of wine in hand and are feeling mellow, she can be entertaining and her exploits laughable (for me, in small doses--ie. one chapter at a time). If you haven't read her, give it a try. If you like her other collections of essays, you'll enjoy this one, too. Personal favorite was the story about vacationing with her nephew. Anyone who's gone on a family vacation can surely relate!

not bad. humorous essays. the theme seems to be "embarrassing things i have done to myself," which is a genre i tend to enjoy. i think it really says something about how my sense of humor has changed since i became a mom that the funniest bit, in my opinion, was about an ill-fated visit to a sea lion cave. she is still struggling with her "punch lines" a little bit in this book, by which i mean, the last line or two of every essay borders on the belabored & throws off the pacing. but this problem is not as pronounced as it was in her earlier books.
