review 1: I like good humor writing, but very few authors make me laugh out loud and LOUDLY. Laurie Notaro made me snort. SNORT. Several times.Love the stories about her parents the most and I'm pretty sure we're twins separated at birth. The chapter on where her dad keeps his "important" e-mail and what her mom did with it as well as the bits about the view her mom has about how dangerous life is (and those e-mails with FWD: FWD: FWD: FWD:...) HILARIOUS! The best part of that one was when Laurie's mom reveals she doesn't read the mail Laurie sends to her. "You send me nonsense." The people near me -- I braved reading this work in public places -- must have thought I was nuts, I was laughing so hard.Ladies, if you're like me, and you hate to work out, read this book. The laughs will... more work your abs like never before.

Laurie is kinda like that friend-of-a-friend you meet at a party who doesn't embarrass easily, talks loudly and monopolizes a conversation with anecdotes (oddly enough this person is often a teacher). If you're not in the mood, she can be somewhat annoying. But if you have a glass of wine in hand and are feeling mellow, she can be entertaining and her exploits laughable (for me, in small doses--ie. one chapter at a time). If you haven't read her, give it a try. If you like her other collections of essays, you'll enjoy this one, too. Personal favorite was the story about vacationing with her nephew. Anyone who's gone on a family vacation can surely relate!

not bad. humorous essays. the theme seems to be "embarrassing things i have done to myself," which is a genre i tend to enjoy. i think it really says something about how my sense of humor has changed since i became a mom that the funniest bit, in my opinion, was about an ill-fated visit to a sea lion cave. she is still struggling with her "punch lines" a little bit in this book, by which i mean, the last line or two of every essay borders on the belabored & throws off the pacing. but this problem is not as pronounced as it was in her earlier books.
