I thoroughly enjoyed Lizzie's back story because of the freedom to choose your story path and form your own perspective of Wilson, which ties in to the theme of how the media influences public perspective. What made it a pleasant surprise for me was that not knowing that the Pick-your-path insert comic was for real, I read it in running page order. Somehow I was able to put the pieces together, treating the disconnected scenes as flashbacks, only to finally realize my embarrassing mistake. Rereading it as intended turned out to be quite a treat.

To stay interesting, series with a core mystery need to end each volume with the feeling that either a big revelation or a major step forward has occurred. It's tough to do that without taking an equally large step backward at the same time, giving the sense that the series is just treading water. As of Volume 3, Unwritten is managing this perfectly and finishes with a tease that makes me immediately want to jump into Volume 4.
