review 1: The problem with comics is that I never know how to rate them. Art gets full marks, and the story clips along at a nice pace. This volume suffers a little for the choose-your-own-adventure volume in the middle, which takes you through multiple timelines for Lizzie Hexam, only one of which actually advances the plot. The choose-your-own-adventure part takes forever to read, too, because there are parts that don't have pages to link you to them, and there are parts you can read for pages without stopping, and the whole thing seemed more confusing than it needed to be. I will give credit for being creative, but in this case it just didn't thrill me.The rest of the book was about what I expected, there was a lot of nice backstory on Lizzie, and enough explanation from Wils... moreon that I feel like I can deal with being in the dark about the rest of it. I'm hoping we get history on Savoy soon. Most of what we know is just bits and pieces, and that he's somehow connected to Sue Morgenstern.
review 2: 4.5 stars!By far my favorite Unwritten volume. From the introduction to the last page I was very much attached to the story. Not as heart wrenching as the last one but still my sympathy was needed for Lizzie. I don't know what to think about Wilson and the path he has created for his "characters". Was what he did to Lizzie / for Lizzie the right decision? The "choose your own adventure" part was fantastic. What a great way to switch things up and get the reader even more involved in the story. I happened to choose all the "right" paths and didn't get much of the backstory the first time through so I was excited to do it again to see the other outcomes. Many of the questions that I had about the previous volumes were answered in this one and I am happy with the direction that the plot seems to be heading it. This series is a big guilty pleasure for me because I loved the Harry Potter series and this is sort of a continuation for me with all the Rowling references. I just can't get enough. The only complaint I had about this volume is the content of the 14th Tommy Taylor book. Being reborn again as a messiah so now all those who suffer may be reborn again though...Tommy Taylor? Yeah...I don't think so. We already have a world renown book with that plot. It's called the Bible. And based on todays society it is very unbelievable that a novel with that plot would be loved and cherished by the teen generation. less

I thoroughly enjoyed Lizzie's back story because of the freedom to choose your story path and form your own perspective of Wilson, which ties in to the theme of how the media influences public perspective. What made it a pleasant surprise for me was that not knowing that the Pick-your-path insert comic was for real, I read it in running page order. Somehow I was able to put the pieces together, treating the disconnected scenes as flashbacks, only to finally realize my embarrassing mistake. Rereading it as intended turned out to be quite a treat.

To stay interesting, series with a core mystery need to end each volume with the feeling that either a big revelation or a major step forward has occurred. It's tough to do that without taking an equally large step backward at the same time, giving the sense that the series is just treading water. As of Volume 3, Unwritten is managing this perfectly and finishes with a tease that makes me immediately want to jump into Volume 4.
