Brilliant. From start to finish. Only a few caveats...-Roger and his friends were too bro-y to really be believable. I understand who the primary audience for this is, so that's a very nitpick-y thing, but it still stuck out a bit. -Two words: contemptible cover. It has you thinking it's a straight-up chick lit romance. It's not, and I'm hella glad I gave the book the benefit of the doubt. This is far more at home with Rainbow Rowell than it is with Sarah Dessen. Hell, at its most chick-lit-y, it's a hybrid of the two, in the best way. I wanted a road-trip book. I got everything I wanted out of 'Amy & Roger'; yes, there's a romance element to it, but Matson buffers it with a solid backstory, a fully-realized America with plenty of pit-stops and side-characters, and character development for both leads. This was a huge thing; nine times out of ten, books with the ole' contemptible cover have the female lead develop, but the guy is just there to be there. Not so here; Matson gives him a full-on story arc that eats most of the book, with Amy's journey really just framing his own. It's a memorable approach. 10/10, wish I owned this in hardcover. Protip: read a physical copy. Matson reproduces photos from the destinations in the book and places them in the prose, along with imagined receipts and email screenshots. The e-book is just another e-book; the physical novel is immersive. Best book of Fall 2014, hands down.

THIS! BOOK! HAS! PLAYLISTS! IN! THE! STORY! AAAAAHHH! I was reading this book, casually beginning and then, just when I didn’t expected it, a playlist. Throughout the book, even more of these little beauties. Morgan Matson, you did an awesome job on that. The storyline is a different story. It was OK, but quite predictable. It’s a bit of an overused cliché. I had such high expectations of this book and I understand, it’s your debut. But still. O V E R U S E D. I would recommend this book to absolute romantics. Otherwise you’d like to puke of sogginess.
