review 1: THIS! BOOK! HAS! PLAYLISTS! IN! THE! STORY! AAAAAHHH! I was reading this book, casually beginning and then, just when I didn’t expected it, a playlist. Throughout the book, even more of these little beauties. Morgan Matson, you did an awesome job on that. The storyline is a different story. It was OK, but quite predictable. It’s a bit of an overused cliché. I had such high expectations of this book and I understand, it’s your debut. But still. O V E R U S E D. I would recommend this book to absolute romantics. Otherwise you’d like to puke of sogginess.
review 2: I seriously enjoyed this! What a great read that made you feel so many emotions by the end. I would highly recommend this to anyone who loves books about road trips and about characters on a jo
... moreurney towards healing, acceptance of deep loss and recovery from the tragedies of life. The writing is nuanced and subtle when it needs to be and never overly dramatic or over bearing despite the at times, serious subject matter and dark tones. Both male and female protagonists are likable, relatable and feel very real. We feel so much for them and with them. Their journey across the country mirrors very well the internal journey they both must take in order to get to the other side of the heart break, grief, loss and devastation they're both dealing with. The side characters are all integral to the story, fully fleshed out and highly memorable. They add so much to the story, helping to give the book real weight and provide a perfect metaphor for the way one (or many) act(s) of kindness can change everything for someone; They are the perfect examples of how meeting some one, meeting many someones, can change your life. Amy and Roger encounter many people and have many adventures along the way on their detour, making you feel as if you are right there with them. Morgan Matson does a great job of fully engaging the reader and building this world for us so completely and skillfully that we are truly a part of their road trip. When the last page is read, one wants nothing more but to begin all over again. Well done Ms. Matson! I will definitely be seeking out more of her books and adding them to my tbr asap! This book has become one of my favorite reads of 2014 and will now have a permanent home on my shelf. less

Brilliant. From start to finish. Only a few caveats...-Roger and his friends were too bro-y to really be believable. I understand who the primary audience for this is, so that's a very nitpick-y thing, but it still stuck out a bit. -Two words: contemptible cover. It has you thinking it's a straight-up chick lit romance. It's not, and I'm hella glad I gave the book the benefit of the doubt. This is far more at home with Rainbow Rowell than it is with Sarah Dessen. Hell, at its most chick-lit-y, it's a hybrid of the two, in the best way. I wanted a road-trip book. I got everything I wanted out of 'Amy & Roger'; yes, there's a romance element to it, but Matson buffers it with a solid backstory, a fully-realized America with plenty of pit-stops and side-characters, and character development for both leads. This was a huge thing; nine times out of ten, books with the ole' contemptible cover have the female lead develop, but the guy is just there to be there. Not so here; Matson gives him a full-on story arc that eats most of the book, with Amy's journey really just framing his own. It's a memorable approach. 10/10, wish I owned this in hardcover. Protip: read a physical copy. Matson reproduces photos from the destinations in the book and places them in the prose, along with imagined receipts and email screenshots. The e-book is just another e-book; the physical novel is immersive. Best book of Fall 2014, hands down.
