I've been waiting patiently for more Dmitri and this book was worth the wait. Cover to cover Dmitri. He's been my favorite since the first book - he's dark, sinister, unapologetically violent and inhuman. Dmitri is tasked with working alongside Honor St. Nicholas, a hunter from the Guild. Honor comes from a tragic past - she was kidnapped and tortured by vampires. Many vampires, from the low ranking to the high ranking, the docile to the most evil. Needless to say, she's got a justifiable reason to fear the undead. Oddly enough, despite her deep-rooted fear, she finds herself drawn to Dmitri for reasons unknown to her. Just as he is drawn to her, but his reason is mostly because she comes off as a rabbit and he likes to hunt his prey. Even still, there's something about Honor that makes Dmitri feel. Being almost 1,000, that's a tough thing to do. For me, the plot of this book was secondary to the relationship developing between Dmitri and Honor. Parts of Dmitri's past were woven through the storyline and honestly, I found myself skipping the main plot of this book just to get to more of Dmitri's backstory. Elena and Raphael weren't in this installment but for a mere few moments as they are tied up in China with the situation regarding Caliane. For the moment, it seems Caliane isn't turning out to be evil incarnate, but only time will tell. Her rising still has Raphael and the other archangels on edge because as they know from experience with Lijuan, being Ancient means being evil, murderous, and destructive. My other favorite from this series, Illium, wasn't nearly in this installment enough for my liking. Here's hoping he's in more of the next...and the next...and the next. Seems like not only does he have Elena wrapped around his finger, but he's slowly working to get Honor wrapped around it as well. He's blue and beautiful, and clearly the ladies love him :)One thing I sincerely hope - even though I'm happy Dmitri found a good place, I hope he doesn't soften up in future books. I like how he is feared, for good reason, and for him to turn into a puss would ruin this for me. Fingers crossed that he is still tortuous and creepy.
“I won’t take any other woman into my heart.” He pressed a finger to her lips when distress colored her eyes.“I’ll wait for you to find me again. So don’t take too long." *tears* Oh gawd this book wasn't anything like I expected, it was so much better! Dmitri brought all the feels outta me. I'm ashamed to say that i wasn't even sure I wanted to read this one yet but once I started I couldn't put it down.
