review 1: I enjoyed the first three books in this series, and was happy to see focus shift onto Dmitri. His back story was interesting, but by about half way it was the only reason I was reading. And while I didn't mind the angle taken with Honor's identity (avoiding spoilers here), I think the strength of the backstory did undermine her as character. The two subplots involving hunting down other vampires also seemed incidental to the story, perhaps too many elements for the story to support. I think it diluted the narrative, and I found it hard to keep track of how the characters were learning the details and following clues - it started to feel a bit convenient and disconnected. I actually began to think I'd have liked to read D&H's story in a shorter length, like Galen and Jessamy... more's novella, without all the extra subplots. And is it just me or is the narrative just plain confusing in many places? I kept having to re-read paragraphs, trying to work out who was talking or why the dialogue had just taken a strange turn. Odd. I have noticed this in the earlier novels but not as badly as in this one.I will remain a fan of the author and of this world (fabulous) but I'll admit I skimmed through a lot of the last third, even the sex scenes which is a bit telling. Still happy to try the next one, but could probably skip this one if you wanted to.
review 2: This review contains spoilers, please do not read it if you do not want to spoil the book.I found reviewing and rating this book really hard. This is not because I did not enjoy the book or I was not engrossed in the story but there were a couple of this Dmitri did that I did not like and I just had some niggles that I cannot get over to give this book a higher rating. My main issue with the book is near the end there is a specific scene in which Dmirti takes advantage of knowledge he gained from Honor about her feelings (can’t think of a better way of putting it) to try and hurt her. This put a damper on my enjoyment of the book. Dmitri decides that Honor knows more about his dead wife that she will not share with him. So he decides to taunt her with his fangs on her neck as he knows of what she suffered in her ordeal with the other vampires. This makes me so angry as he has spend the book helping her overcome her ordeal and punishing the vampires who carried it out. This act made me feel undermined their relationship.I admit he contemplates trying to hurt her and even starts to but then decides not to as he understands it will completely break her, people may argue that because he didn’t actually hurt her it’s not a big deal. Two words, emotional betrayal. That what he does, he takes advantage of knowledge he has gain from honor because she trusted him and let him in to try and hurt her. At first Honor is upset wit him and asks him to leave her but literally after 5 minutes it’s ok. I’m not she should not forgive Dmitri at all but I do not believe she should forgiven him that easily. For me this did not gel with what how I say Honor, she was suppose to be someone who had been through something horrific and so had issues trusting and letting others in, so for her to forgive Dmirti straight away it did not work for me.That issue aside the book was a good read, it had a good story and I was intrigued and grateful to get some insight into Dmitri’s thinking. I liked that I got to understand him better as I prefer other member’s on Rapheal’s seven based on previous reads. Both character’s were well developed and I thought Honor was a really good female lead as she worked to overcome her ordeal instead of let it hold her down. The book is well writing and keeps you engrossed, the story line and good and the synopsis of this book covers the main gist of it. However I have finally figured out what confuses me about the writing sometime, there can be some dialogues between two characters in which it takes you a couple of minutes to work out who said what.I found it sweet that even after all this time he still loved his wife. You figure out quickly that this book is going to be a reincarnation one. Nalini Singh handled the reincarnation side of this story really well too. I did not feel in this book that Dmitri only loved Honor because she was the reincarnation of his wife. They actually got to know each other, build the relationship and then find out. less

I've been waiting patiently for more Dmitri and this book was worth the wait. Cover to cover Dmitri. He's been my favorite since the first book - he's dark, sinister, unapologetically violent and inhuman. Dmitri is tasked with working alongside Honor St. Nicholas, a hunter from the Guild. Honor comes from a tragic past - she was kidnapped and tortured by vampires. Many vampires, from the low ranking to the high ranking, the docile to the most evil. Needless to say, she's got a justifiable reason to fear the undead. Oddly enough, despite her deep-rooted fear, she finds herself drawn to Dmitri for reasons unknown to her. Just as he is drawn to her, but his reason is mostly because she comes off as a rabbit and he likes to hunt his prey. Even still, there's something about Honor that makes Dmitri feel. Being almost 1,000, that's a tough thing to do. For me, the plot of this book was secondary to the relationship developing between Dmitri and Honor. Parts of Dmitri's past were woven through the storyline and honestly, I found myself skipping the main plot of this book just to get to more of Dmitri's backstory. Elena and Raphael weren't in this installment but for a mere few moments as they are tied up in China with the situation regarding Caliane. For the moment, it seems Caliane isn't turning out to be evil incarnate, but only time will tell. Her rising still has Raphael and the other archangels on edge because as they know from experience with Lijuan, being Ancient means being evil, murderous, and destructive. My other favorite from this series, Illium, wasn't nearly in this installment enough for my liking. Here's hoping he's in more of the next...and the next...and the next. Seems like not only does he have Elena wrapped around his finger, but he's slowly working to get Honor wrapped around it as well. He's blue and beautiful, and clearly the ladies love him :)One thing I sincerely hope - even though I'm happy Dmitri found a good place, I hope he doesn't soften up in future books. I like how he is feared, for good reason, and for him to turn into a puss would ruin this for me. Fingers crossed that he is still tortuous and creepy.

“I won’t take any other woman into my heart.” He pressed a finger to her lips when distress colored her eyes.“I’ll wait for you to find me again. So don’t take too long." *tears* Oh gawd this book wasn't anything like I expected, it was so much better! Dmitri brought all the feels outta me. I'm ashamed to say that i wasn't even sure I wanted to read this one yet but once I started I couldn't put it down.
