I enjoyed this one, a cold-case murder mystery. I enjoyed the characters, the family, the ranch life. I felt sorry for Collin. I may have even a cried a touch at the deaths at least how they affected the brother Chase - of all people. It was predictable, but then this also kept me engaged. I kept waiting and reading and waiting. Fire does have a significance as does Laurie-Jo's bad behavior / reputation. And in between there were surprises and suspense. I found it hard to put down.I was really routing for Collin and Jody - they both deserve happiness. I wont say any more than that. Also I checked out those Monument Rocks in Gove County, KS - they do seem to change color depending on the light. Pretty cool.

As someone who loves a good mystery, I was excited to stumble across this book. I enjoyed the plot line and found that although the ending wasn't a complete surprise, I could still enjoy the suspense of the mystery throughout the novel. The story flashes back and forth from the past to the present, an element I believe makes it more fun for the reader to put together the clues. The writing and general story remind me a little bit of Tana French's novels, all of which I enjoyed. Needless to say, I will be reading more books by Nancy Pickard!
