review 1: I love Nancy Pickard's work. This murder mystery is unusual in that as it begins everyone is sure who commited the murders, but there is a shadow of doubt that begins growing. Touches on themes about the rush to judgment, forgiveness and how to move on after tragedy that often don't get much attention in mystery novels. Some critics don't like the ending, and I'm not sure it would happen in real life, but raises some what ifs about forgiveness and being open to life's possibilities.
review 2: I loved the book! It's my first by this author. I'm trying to read a novel set in every state and chose this book set in western Kansas because of recommendations on Goodreads and other places. Nancy Pickard, who lives in the Kansas City area, does not disappoint. The
... morestory centers around a 23 year old murder of young Jody's father and the disappearance of her mother. Jody has returned to the small town of Rose, Kansas to begin teaching and all is not as clear as she perhaps thought. When the man accused of the murder is released from prison, a series of events unfold that led to unexpected consequences. Great story. I look forward to reading more. Ms. Pickard makes the high plains of western Kansas come alive. less

I enjoyed this one, a cold-case murder mystery. I enjoyed the characters, the family, the ranch life. I felt sorry for Collin. I may have even a cried a touch at the deaths at least how they affected the brother Chase - of all people. It was predictable, but then this also kept me engaged. I kept waiting and reading and waiting. Fire does have a significance as does Laurie-Jo's bad behavior / reputation. And in between there were surprises and suspense. I found it hard to put down.I was really routing for Collin and Jody - they both deserve happiness. I wont say any more than that. Also I checked out those Monument Rocks in Gove County, KS - they do seem to change color depending on the light. Pretty cool.

As someone who loves a good mystery, I was excited to stumble across this book. I enjoyed the plot line and found that although the ending wasn't a complete surprise, I could still enjoy the suspense of the mystery throughout the novel. The story flashes back and forth from the past to the present, an element I believe makes it more fun for the reader to put together the clues. The writing and general story remind me a little bit of Tana French's novels, all of which I enjoyed. Needless to say, I will be reading more books by Nancy Pickard!
