This was the first volume of the New 52 Batman series from DC, and while I did like it, I didn't love it. The Court of Owls and the Talons are cool villains, but the idea they've ruled Gotham for hundreds of years just seems a bit much to me. I'd like to call it retconning, but considering this is basically a reboot of the DCU, I dont think that term applies? Also, I didnt like the idea Nightwing's family was tied into the Court of Owls as well, or that Nightwing was basically meant to be a Talon as well. It just seemed a little too far fetched, even for a comic book. I always like Greg Capullos art, but in this volume he seemed almost a little cartoony for the subject matter, which is strange considering Spawn, his other big work, was much darker than this. Overall, it's enjoyable, and I'd still recommend it for any Batman fan, but really, everything just seemed a step off.

A fascinating story, I didn't expect it to be so good! I've been putting it off for quite a while, together with many others but I'm glad I finally invested the time to read it. Funnily enough, it was the TV show Gotham which got me to read it - I heard there're several parallels between them and there indeed are. Sadly, the show will never get far enough (not just as run-time, but as style too) to be anything more than just "vaguely inspired" by The Court of Owls.
