review 1: This Batman story felt fresh and new, and at the same time like a classic tale and totally part of the Batman mythos. Well done Snyder and team.Few complaints: Bruce looked a tad too young -- this was probably on purpose. There was a shot with Bruce, Dick and Tim and another with the Lincoln March character that I took issue with due to the heights of the men. Batman is tall, Dick is tall. The scene made Mr. March look like a giant and Dick like a shrimp. Small nitpick in an otherwise great tale. The graphic design on The Talons was superb too.
review 2: I didn't like the first few "New 52" books I picked up, and I still have a love-hate relationship with the "New 52" series of DC Comics books. In short, DC needs to be DC - with great characters, and compl
... moreex relationships, but where the characters trust each other with their lives and identities - leave the Marvel style to Marvel, in my opinion. DC has 76 years of history and characters, they need to bring that back.I must say, I found Batman Vol. 1, a compelling read. I sat down and read the (albeit thin) graphic novel this afternoon, and I really couldn't put it down. I actually wanted to order Vol. 2 right away, but it was sold out at Amazon, so I'll wait for it to get back in stock, or pick it up during one of B&N's 3-for-2 sales. I liked how Bruce/Batman, Dick/Nightwing, and Alfred were written - all reminded me of the characters I knew and loved so well. But, like Bruce, I had a hard time buying the Conspiracy-of-Evil known as the Court of Owls. I also found it odd that Bruce, confronted, as he was that the conspiracy existed, kept denying it. I wanted to see more interaction between Bruce and Alfred, of course - and between Bruce and Dick. And, I must admit, by the end of the graphic novel - it did make sense that Gotham's incredible run of bad luck could be caused by the Court of Owls trying and often succeeding in killing anyone trying to bring hope, light, and happiness to Gotham.Definitely recommended to Batman and DC fans, though I personally would like to see the pre-New 52 Justice League and main DC characters back. less

This was the first volume of the New 52 Batman series from DC, and while I did like it, I didn't love it. The Court of Owls and the Talons are cool villains, but the idea they've ruled Gotham for hundreds of years just seems a bit much to me. I'd like to call it retconning, but considering this is basically a reboot of the DCU, I dont think that term applies? Also, I didnt like the idea Nightwing's family was tied into the Court of Owls as well, or that Nightwing was basically meant to be a Talon as well. It just seemed a little too far fetched, even for a comic book. I always like Greg Capullos art, but in this volume he seemed almost a little cartoony for the subject matter, which is strange considering Spawn, his other big work, was much darker than this. Overall, it's enjoyable, and I'd still recommend it for any Batman fan, but really, everything just seemed a step off.

A fascinating story, I didn't expect it to be so good! I've been putting it off for quite a while, together with many others but I'm glad I finally invested the time to read it. Funnily enough, it was the TV show Gotham which got me to read it - I heard there're several parallels between them and there indeed are. Sadly, the show will never get far enough (not just as run-time, but as style too) to be anything more than just "vaguely inspired" by The Court of Owls.
