review 1: I reread this book today and my 2 star rating stands. I sincerely dislike saying anything negative about what Allen Say writes. My colleagues in the selection department concur that it's not Allen Say's best work. The book is an autobiographical account of Say and his daughter, Yuriko, who faced bullying and teasing from both her kids and the teacher. She is called "Eureka" so she changes her name to Michelle to sound more anglo. There seems to be no solution in the book except to ignore her perpetrators and passively let it pass. I find this frustrating and unacceptable. More proactive strategies should have been employed to make sure the bullying is controlled--perhaps a unit in class addressing bullying. Because the book is autobiographical of a favorite author, I di... moredn't have the heart to give it just one star.
review 2: Yuriko was always happy with her name and with making beautiful artwork. All of this changes when a new art teachers mispronounces her name as "Eureka". Now Yuriko hates her name and things get worse when she brings a picture of herself to school in a kimono. Her father reminds her o her heritage and customs and she finds a way to impress her art teacher with her model of the Golden Gate bridge and she finally comes to terms with her beautiful name as well. less
