Scholastic Press.Sibert Medal Honor 2012Sibert Medal HonorThis interesting book seems to be part autobiography and part history lesson for the artist Allen Say. The book that he wrote is about his own journey to becoming a famous artist. The story begins with his birth in Yokohama, Japan and proceeds to show his development through WWII. One of the most incredible things that this book informs about Say is his incredible ability to draw people, places, and things purely from memory. There are illustrations of his former teachers and other people he met. The life of being an artist did not prove to be easy for Say. His father did not approve of his art and he embarked on a very long apprenticeship to become a successful ar... moretist. I think this is a wonderful book for art teachers to use in their class. It does not focus only on the art, but also focuses the development of the artist.
review 2: To date, Allen Say has written and illustrated many picture books and has won awards for his work. Drawing from Memory is a sort of picture book and memoir/autobiography hybrid in which he tells the story of how he came to study art and cartooning under his favorite cartoonist, Noro Shinpei, up until he moved to America with his father and his family. He includes many original drawings, some of the cartoons he helped produce with Noro Shinpei, photographs and drawings from his memories of this time. I enjoy much of Say's works, so being able to read his accounts of how he became an artist is enjoyable. less
