review 2: As usual, Say's lovely paintings
... more are stronger than his story, but I did find this story stronger than his norm. I liked the way he combined a myth (the Crane Wife) with a contemporary child's experience of hearing the story -- more original than the standard "retelling" or "modernization" of a fairy tale. I also thought he handled the little boy's thoughts and feelings very delicately and sensitively. less

Sort of an uneven story, charming illustrations, but the story is hard to follow.
