review 1: What an entertaining take on a style and usage book! It's a fun book to pick up and peruse, but I also felt compelled to read the whole thing--partly because I think Bierce himself was a pretty fascinating guy and partly because of Freeman's engaging commentary on Bierce's rules. What I found most interesting was Bierce's insistence that each word or phrase in the English language should have only one meaning, and that for each intended meaning there is one word that says it best. I enjoyed this book!
review 2: This "Little Blacklist of Literary Faults" is organized alphabetically for ease of reference. Examples include correcting confusions between admit/confess, healthy/wholesome, and less/fewer, and many more. Citations like: "Got Married for Married. If t
... morehis is correct we should say, also, "got dead" for died; one expression is as good as the other," show an economy of expression that enhances their usefulness today as much as when they were written. But there are numerous examples that demonstrate just how much language and usage evolve through time (e.g. Mistaken for Mistake. "You are mistaken." For whom? Say, You mistake.) less
